Shoring Up the Grand River.
This piece was constructed from litter collected in the Grand River, ash wood, and native grass planted in soil. The litter, which forms walls, describes the banks of the Grand River as it flows from Grand Rapids out to Lake Michigan. The walls are shored up by dead ash wood. The emerald ash borer is killing ash trees all over the upper Midwest. This insect was brought into the US aboard shipping materials from Asia.
